How To Become Self Employed In 2012

If you are wondering how to become self employed it’s very simple. If you have a job quit it and start a business.

It’s as simple as that.

What I just said may leave you scratching your head….

….and it should.

But I’m just saying that for shock factor.

LOL. Funny huh?

On a serious note, now that I have your attention, if you really want to know how to become self employed, let me share with you why that may not be the best idea or route to take.

Growing up I’ve always had the entrepreneurial spirit. I sold my own artwork for profit, sold candy in high school, washed a few cars, and cut grass.

When I was cutting a clients grass I was introduced to the RichDad PoorDad book.

I didn’t read it at all.

Then when I was around 19-20 my dad introduced me to the network marketing idea. I fell in love with the idea of making a ton of money just by sharing a product and helping other people.

After a few stints here and there in several MLM companies, I stopped for a while because back then I was just in it to make a few bucks.

I continued to work a 9-5 job. Then in late 2003, I became a 1099 contractor, which in other terms, technically I was self employed.

I sold phones for a Verizon authorized dealer. When I went to work, I made money, providing I or my counterparts sold something. Even when I was at work there were plenty of times that I didn’t make money.

Why?
Because it was straight commission.

And I most definitely didn’t make money when I wasn’t at work.

Why?

Because when you are self employed, if you are not making a sale, providing a service to a client at that time, or something to that nature, you are NOT MAKING MONEY.

Then around 2004 I believe, I heard of this Rich Dad Poor Dad book again and also another one in that series called the Cash Flow Quadrant.

So I decided to read them.

And let’s just say my eyes were open.

I realized there are 4 quadrants that people earn money in.

The left side is the E/S quadrant which stands for Employee and Self Employed. The right side is the B/I quadrant, which stands for Business owner and Investor.

Robert Kiyosaki and other multi million and billionaires will tell anyone that is searching on how to become self employed that being in the left quadrant, where self employed people are, is the WORST WAY to earn money.

Why?

I don’t know if you caught it but I shared it with you up above. But just in case you missed it, let me explain.

Barbers, dentists, lawyers, MOST NETWORK MARKETERS, doctors that have their own practice, CPA’s, etc….majority of them, although they may have their own business, are self employed.

The reason being is if they are not cutting hair, have their hand in someone’s mouth, performing surgery, billing a client, they are not making money. It doesn’t matter how many hours you work or how much money you make either.

I want to detour you as much as possible from learning how to become self employed and being in the left quadrant and help shift your thinking to learning how to be a business owner and move to the right quadrant.

Now if you are reading this, you may be involved in the network marketing industry and noticed that I mentioned most network marketers are self employed.

That’s the truth because if you stop recruiting you know your income will go down because you don’t have anyone duplicating.

That being said here is why your goal should not be to get understanding on how to become self employed but rather get understanding on how to become a business owner.

Ultimately one of the main things that separates real business owners from self employed people is called LEVERAGE.

Real business owners realize the power of leveraging themselves by implementing SYSTEMS in place that run on AUTOPILOT, teaching others to do what they do, thus multiplying their efforts over time.

You will know that you are no longer self employed when you can walk away and your business still does the same if not more amount of production, business, or revenue.

To be honest with you, up until a few months ago, since I’ve been in the network marketing/ direct sales industry, I wasn’t experiencing any type of duplication or leverage.

I mean the business model (network marketing) itself shows how you can use leverage BUT I wasn’t seeing it at all.

But that changed October when I came across a business model that was more powerful and more duplicatable than all the others that I’ve seen out there.

Now I am starting to see my team duplicate my efforts, make money, and bring in others that are doing the same.

Although I am not at the point where I can just walk away and my business still do the same level of income, I am well on my way now more than I ever have been before. So yes, according to Robert Kiyosaki’s definition, I am still self employed, part of the E/S quadrant.

The good thing is that I don’t have to stay there. I am aggressively moving towards the B/I quadrant and want to bring others with me. Will you join me on this journey?
